Journey-woman Melody Rossiter of outerunderthings.com leads a six week course in the essential drafting, design and construction techniques of Victorian corset making.
Melody RossiterWe will begin by teaching you how to take proper measurements, and use them to draft a custom corset pattern. Melody will guide you through the process of creating and fitting a mockup and teaching essential skills to perfect your precision corset tailoring techniques. You will construct a corset perfectly fitted to your measurements from beginning to end!

The corset making class meets over six weeks. This class requires homework to keep up, and we include with your enrollment open-sew studio time to allow for additional instruction outside of class-time.
Topics covered in this six week course include:

The Corset Making class meets over six weeks, with homework required to keep up.



Machines are available for class use; Open Studio time is included with your enrollment allowing you to work on and seek guidance with your corset between classes.
In Class 1 we will begin by discussing design elements, take measurements, and then use those measurements to draft your custom pattern. We will use the pattern to create a corset mockup to be fitted in the following class.

In Class 2 we will lead you through some complicated techniques and give you plenty of time to practice them on your mockup, to get you ready for the real thing! Homework will involve shopping for your outer fashion fabric and lining fabrics!

In Class 3 We will go through the process of fitting your mockup and making alterations to your paper pattern. From here you will cut out your corset pieces and begin main construction.

In Class 4 we will continue learning new construction techniques like flat-lining and flat felling your seams and various tailoring tricks and hints. We will apply our stay channels and prepare our liners. This is the best time to take advantage of the open-sew time!

In Class 5 we will work with busk application, back grommet facing and liner attachment, as well as binding techniques.
We will begin by teaching you how to take proper measurements, and use them to draft a custom corset pattern. Melody will guide you through the process of creating and fitting a mockup and teaching essential skills to perfect your precision corset tailoring techniques. You will construct a corset perfectly fitted to your measurements from beginning to end!
In Class 6 we will insert our spiral steel stays and finish up on binding. We will show you how to place and apply your grommets, and lace your corset!

Provided materials kit includes:

front-opening busk (x1), coutil (18"x60"),
continuous spiral steel boning (3yds),
boning tips (x24), twill tape (3yds), lacing (8yds).

You will need to bring your chosen
fashion fabric, lining fabric, bias tape, and thread.

Sewing Machine Maintenance Seminar
Comprehensive techniques for self-sufficiency

Our resident repairman will discuss with you proper care and cleaning of your machine, preventative maintenance as well as what to look for when purchasing a new or used sewing machine.

Learn basic maintenance and trouble-shooting, as well as an overview of textiles, sewing machines and their technologies. You will learn how to choose the right material and select proper needles, thread, feet and accessories for your projects.

You will learn to draft your own bra pattern and be guided through the fitting process, once adjusted this pattern will serve you for years to come!

We will cover all construction techniques in the mock up giving ample time to practice.

Practice the fundamentals of altering paper patterns to your measurements before constructing a mock-up of your perfect pants. One-on-one fitting assures properly fitted pants and a pattern you will use again and again.

Bring the pattern of your choice, some drawings for your yolk and cuff and your fabric choices to the first class. We're going to be on a wild bucking ride of applique, plackets, facings, collars and cuffs (we can even add a loop for your lasso!).
